About 25 years ago, I worked with a guy who was learning to read Chinese. At the time, I thought he was a bit daffy, but now I see that he had it right. With the world’s manufacturing all moving to China, Chinese-language skills will help engineers and manufacturing types get ahead.
Having said that, I just came across the article, “HK auto parts industry rides on R&D to fly high” on the website auto.2456.com. While much of the website is in Engish, there’s quite a bit of it in Chinese as well.
The article reports on a talk by Dr Tony Lee, CEO of Hong Kong’s Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems (APAS) R & D Centre. Dr. Lee notes that while Hong Kong has not played a big role in the automotive industry, the potential is there, especially given Hong Kong’s proximity to China. he APAS R & D Centre was established in 2006 to take advantage of the opportunities.
The APAS R & D Centre currently focuses on four areas: electronics & software; safety; hybrid, electric drives & environment; new materials & processes and is currently working on 34 different projects. Its facilities include a test center, which was formally opened at a recent open house.
