Europeans to Increase Use of Used Test Equipment

February 20th, 2006

A Frost & Sullivan market study says that, with the economic slowdown in Europe, customers in the automotive, aerospace and defence, electronics and telecommunication industries are growing aware of the benefits of purchasing test and measurement equipment, and that the market is poised for growth. Further, with growing opportunities in the automotive, electronic and telecommunication industries in Asia, used equipment vendors are also eager to establish a global presence by targeting Asian customers.

Unfortunately, the supply of used test and measurement equipment has not been sufficient to meet existing demand and equipment availability remains a challenge. The study cites electronic counters, oscilloscopes, power meters, and multimeters as the types of instruments in most demand. Overall, the overall European used test and measurement equipment market is projected to grow from $231.5 million in 2005 to $482.9 million by 2011.

Used test equipment can be be a good deal, but remember that unless you are purchasing the equipment from the manufacturer, it will generally not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. To ensure that you’re not buying someone else’s problem, make sure that you get calibration certificates and ask for a warranty from the equipment vendor.
