CiA Establishes J1939 Interest Group

November 29th, 2005

CAN in Automation (CiA) members have formed a technical working group for J1939-based specifications. The scope of the Interest Group (IG) J1939 covers the following topics:

  • Development and maintenance of CiA 500 (J1939-based specifications) series
  • CiA 501 Recreation vehicle CAN (RV-C) communication profile
  • CiA 502 Recreation vehicle CAN (RV-C) application profile
  • CiA 50X CANopen PGN specification
  • CiA 50X J1939-based VDMA fluid power profile
  • CiA 50X J1939-71 gateway to CiA 421-5
  • CiA 50X J1939-71 gateway to CiA 436-2/5

Review of and comments to J1939-based standards

  • SAE J1939 series
  • ISO 11992 series
  • ISO 11783 series
  • NMEA2000 series
  • FMS (Fleet management system)
  • MILCAN A (J1939-based communication system)

Review of J1939-related CiA 400 series

  • CiA 413-6 Framework for gateways to J1939-based networks
  • CiA 421-5 Power diesel system interface
  • CiA 422 Truck gateway for municipal vehicles (garbage truck bodies)
  • CiA 436-2/5 Engine system and transmission system (construction machines) interfaces
  • CiA 4XX Truck gateway for refrigerator vehicles

The 2006 work-plan of the IG includes the publication of CiA 501 (J1939-based communication profile for recreational vehicles) and CiA 502 (J1939-based application profile for recreational vehicles) specifications. The IG chaired by Edward Heck (HED) is going to define the content of the CANopen PGNs (parameter group number). These CAM11 and CAM21 (CANopen application messages) will be used to remotely control CANopen device in a sub-layered network that is accessible via gateway devices. This tunneling mechanism can even be used if the CANopen application is trailer-mounted. In this case the CANopen service request is transmitted via the J1939-based power-train network and the ISO 11992-compatible truck/trailer point-to-point network, which is also CAN-based.

The CiA international users and manufacturers group founded in 1992 has been joined by more than 400 members (companies and universities). The non-profit organization runs offices in Germany (international headquarters) and in the USA. Visit the CiA website for more information on how to participate.
